Kythnos Hot Springs

In modern times Kythnos acquired a second name, "Thermia" (meaning “Warm”), due to the hot springs which are located in the picturesque Loutra bay, on the northeast side of the island.

There are two hot springs: The first is called St. Anargyroi and it is located in the spa of the area which attracts many visitors. The second one is called Kakavos Source. It is 50 m. far from the first one and its temperature reaches 52 degrees C.

The water of the hot springs helps the treatment of rheumatic, arthritic and gynecological diseases.

Monastery of Panagia Nikous

The Monastery of Panagia Nikous is at a short distance outside the capital of the island. The monastery took its name from the Byzantine Virgin "Nikopoios" and it is built, like other churches of the island, on the ruins of an ancient temple. The Katholikon, the only part of the monastery that you can see till nowadays, housed the Great School during the Turkish occupation shortly before 1821.

Mines of Kythnos

In the middle of the 19th century there was an increased need for fossil fuels. This need was created by the industrial revolution in the Western countries and resulted in the opening of mines in most Aegean islands. The iron mines of Kythnos operated from 1873 to 1940. The mines are currently inactive, but the remains of the mining activity (administrative buildings, social housing, loading stairs, arcades and equipment) can still be seen everywhere on the island.
